Noontil, Lucienne: Possum Tale.

** NOONTIL, Lucienne Possum Tale Avant Press, 2009 unpaged $17.95 pbk ISBN 9780980448443 SCIS 1453650

Rusty the ringtail possum needs to find a new home because he has grown so much and the younger possums in the family need more room. He eventually finds a new home after some scary encounters and settles in. The illustrations support and enhance the simple text. They are watercolour with ink details and there is use of x-ray style paintings to show inside a shape (a roof and wall) to give more detail. Lucienne successfully evokes the urban setting and the layout makes good use of white space as well as full page images. The anthropomorphism of a ringtail possum wearing a backpack with an umbrella and blanket in it fits with the residential theme of animals surviving within the human fringe. This is an unremarkable story suitable for sharing with very young children.
