Nonwoven installation making inroads into Turkish market.

While the nonwovens industry in Turkey has not been one of the major geographic markets for the industry, one company is hard at work trying to change that. Cavit Cicek Tekstil Sanayi Ve Ticaret Ltd., located in Istanbul, has been manufacturing nonwovens since 1968. The company, which got its start in the plastics industry more than 40 years ago, currently has 10 nonwoven production lines.

Cicek is involved in the production of roll goods for the automotive, footwear, filtration and geotextile markets. It operates from one facility in Istanbul, but it is working on constructing another larger facility to accommodate growth.

Currently, the company has seven chemical bonded lines, two thermal bonded lines--one of which was just installed last summer--and one needlepunching line. The company uses opening/blending equipment from Temafa, carding equipment from Thibeau, bonding from Comerio and a winder from A.Celli. Overall, eight of the company's 10 lines were purchased from Thibeau, while two of them are

The new facility under construction marks a departure from previous technologies, however; this will be Cicek's first foray into spunbonding. The likely end use application at the new facility is interlinings and the new facility is expected to be up and running by mid-1994.

Using a variety of raw materials--polyester, polypropylene, polyamid and viscose--has enabled the company to move into broader fields. Cicek is one of the largest companies in Turkey and it is concentrating effectively on price regulations to remain competitive. Major markets in Turkey are sanitary products, floorcovering and interlinings. However, the company has also expanded outside of Turkey; during the last two years it began exporting product to Europe, primarily England and France.
