Noisy ghosts that can hit or bite'.

POLTERGEIST is a German term meaning 'noisy ghost'.

Believers claim they are responsible for physical disturbances in the supernatural world.

It's alleged they can hit, pinch and bite people as well as moving objects and making loud noises. But most reports of supposed poltergeist activity involve the movement or levitation of objects, or knocking on doors.

Poltergeists are described by believers as troublesome spirits who haunt a particular person, rather than a location.

There are accounts of such "hauntings" from the first century AD. Some believers say poltergeists are closely associated with the four elements - fire, air, water and earth.
