Noiject.

With its rusting iron-plated walls, Noiject looks and sounds like an industrial wasteland. Indeed, the work of Saburo Teshigawara + Karas (BAM's Majestic Theater, October 12--16, 1994) is generally said to concern the frantic life of modern Tokyo.

But a spiritual sensuousness pervades Teshigawara's own dancing--which caresses the air and yearns upward, almost escaping gravity, then plunges to earth--and it pervades his use of materials and noise. Previously, as a performer, he has hit his head against metal walls and has sunk his body onto piles of breaking glass; he has said in an interview that he isn't hurt because he is interacting with the materials.

In Noiject, if you looked quickly upstage, you saw him deliberately falling like a board against the edge of a metal stage wing, catching it smack on his forehead. He remained there, demonstrating mind over matter.
