No-hitter helps Marist sweep.
Byline: The Register-GuardPat Cooley threw a no-hitter with 11 strikeouts in the second game, and Ryan Geider pitched a two-hitter in the opener as Marist swept a nonleague prep baseball doubleheader from North Bend on Monday, winning the first game 12-1 and claiming the second contest 9-0.
Cooley also had a triple, single and three RBIs at the plate in the second win.
Churchill scored four runs in the top of the seventh inning to pull out a 4-2 nonleague victory at McMinnville. Trailing 2-0, the Lancers' scored their first run on an error, followed by a run-scoring fielder's choice to tie the game. Junior Levi Begin then smacked a two-run single.
Mike Woodfin pitched a two-hitter with eight strikeouts in the second game as Elmira won two games at the eight-team Rogue River prep baseball tournament, downing Seaside 3-1 and defeating Central 5-1.
Mike Powell collected three doubles, two singles and four RBIs and pitcher Steffan Bolin struck out 12 to lead Oakridge to a 17-6 nonleague prep baseball victory over host Riddle.
Siuslaw split a nonleague baseball doubleheader with visiting Douglas, winning the opener 6-4 and dropping the seond game 12-1. Ryan Mead and Karl Wangerin each had two hits for Siuslaw in the first game, and Nick Hutton smacked a pair of hits to lead the Trojans in the second game.
Thurston opened its baseball season with 2-0 nonleague prep baseball victory over visiting Pleasant Hill, as pitcher Danny Sales threw six innings and Cole Smith pitched the final inning of a one-hitter.
Sheldon split two prep softball games at Central Point, losing to Crater 9-1 before defeating Ashland 7-5. In the win, Keri Bellotti led the Irish with a triple, double and four RBIs.
North Eugene split two games at the Medford Spring Break prep softball tournament. The Highlanders fell to Grants Pass 2-0 before recovering to defeat South Medford.
North Eugene pitcher Ashley Likens stroked a two-out single in the seventh inning to spoil a no-hitter in the first game. Likens also struck out seven Grants Pass batters.
Megan Bivins pitched a three-hitter and also knocked in two runs in the eighth inning to lead West Albany to a 2-0 nonleague triumph over host Churchill.
A two-run double by Abby Jorgensen highlighted Junction City's 10-3 nonleague win over Tillamook in the first game of a doubleheader. The Cheesemakers took the second game 7-1.
Karen Thompson pitched a one-hitter in the opener as North Bend swept a nonleague doubleheader from visiting Gold Beach, winning the opener 3-0 and taking the second game 17-7.
Siuslaw split a nonleague doubleheader with visiting Douglas, losing to the Trojans 10-1 in the opener before winning the nine-inning second game 11-10. Wendy Drake led Douglas in the first game with a two-hit, seven-strikeout effort and added two hits and two RBIs. In the second game, the Vikings got two hits and three runs from Jennifer Barrett.
