No way for a statesman to act, Mr Cook.

IF Robin Cook had any humility he would be a humble man today. But he hasn't and he isn't.

The Foreign Secretary is arguably the cleverest member of the Cabinet. His problem is that he knows it and wants everyone else to know it too which is why he has made so many enemies.

It is that overweening arrogance which has landed him in the mess he is now in.

Robin Cook cannot be blamed for falling in love with Gaynor Regan or the break-up of his marriage. Although the way he deceived his wife puts a question mark over his moral integrity.

But he can be blamed for considering replacing his diary secretary with Mrs Regan without letting on the nature of their relationship.

That was reprehensible and showed a grave lack of judgement.

He can be blamed for attacking Anne Bullen at an international press conference knowing that her contract prevented her from defending herself.

Those were the actions of a coward and a bully.

And he can be blamed for trying to cover-up this whole affair by not coming clean until the truth was dragged out of him by Parliamentary Questions.

That does not say much for New Labour's pledge to honest and open government.

Robin Cook thought he was so smart he could get away with anything. He aspires to be a statesman but there is nothing statesmanlike about the way he is conducting himself.

Even his bitter and betrayed wife has behaved with more dignity.

John Major had a way of dealing with ministers who let themselves, their families and the country down. He fired them.
