A jury has failed to reach a verdict in the trial of a doctor accused of causing the death of a baby by dangerous driving.

Dr Mohammed Hussain, 63, a GP from northwest London, will return to court in a week to learn if he is to face a retrial over the death of two-month-old Sacha Mason.

After six-and-a-half hours of deliberations, the jury of five men and seven women was discharged from Harrow Crown Court.

Asked by the judge if the jury might reach a majority verdict if given more time, the foreman replied: "No.

"We are hopelessly deadlocked."

Judge Ronald Moss gave Hussain unconditional bail and asked him to return to court next week when the Crown will announce if he will face retrial.

Hussain, of Starling Close, swerved off a residential street in August 2007 and mounted a pavement where his car fatally struck Sacha as he was being pushed along by his mother, the court heard.

The married father of three, who was supported in court by his family, said afterwards: "We are distressed for everyone involved.

"It has been emotional for everyone involved and we really feel for the baby's family as well, having it all dragged up again."

Sacha's parents - Miriana Weston and David Mason, who are expecting another child - were not in court to hear the verdict.

Hussain was on his way home from his surgery in Kilburn shortly after 6pm when the crash happened in Park Avenue, Willesden. He denied the charge.
