No mercy appeal pending in the presidency: President House.

ISLAMABAD, August 08, 2010 (Frontier Star): Press Secretary of President Asif Ali Zardari has clarified that at present no mercy petition has been pending in the President House for Indian Spy Manjet Singh adding that the former government had stayed the execution of Manjeet. The press secretary in his explanatory note stated that no mercy petition under the law, including that of Manjeet Singh was pending with the Presidency. He said that some petitions seeking commutation of death sentences to life imprisonment were submitted to President Asif Ali Zardari. He also said that the issue had arisen on account of a speech by the prime minister made on the floor of the National Assembly that the government was considering to commute death sentence to life imprisonment in suitable cases. The law ministry was also considering the matter with the Interior Ministry, that has informed the presidency that they have commenced actions of legislative changes to be placed before the cabinet keeping in view public policy and Shariah for its presentation before the parliament, Press Secretary said. He also said that the presidency was awaiting the advice of the government adding attributing any delay towards the presidency in this connection was not factual.
