No joke...comedy club on at the Town Hall.

Byline: NEIL ATKINSON

ORGANISERS are promising a festival of laughs "to banish the Monday morning blues".

Kirklees Council has confirmed a deal with the famous Jongleurs Comedy Club to bring a season of humour to Huddersfield.

The Town Hall is to stage seven comedy nights on Sundays starting in February - with the chance to see the next big stand-up comic.

Stars who made their name through Jongleurs in the past include Eddie Izzard, Harry Enfield, Al Murray, Jack Dee and Graham Norton.

Richard Batterby, audience management and development officer for Kirklees Town Halls, said: "We're delighted to be working with such a well-established comedy brand as Jongleurs. "We're keen to develop a good quality comedy scene in Kirklees Town Halls and look forward to a long and successful partn e r s h i p w i t h t h e Jon g l e u r s Comedy Club.

He added: "Jongleurs has been an amazing success when they have held clubs around the country. They used to have nights in Leeds, but no longer, and we will be the only one in this area.

"We know there is a demand for comedy in this area, as can be seen by the sell-out show featuring Rhod Gilbert last night.

"The Lawrence Batley Theatre does have comedy nights in the Cellar Theatre and we hope the Town Hall events will complement that."

The plan is to have a compere and at least three up and coming comics on each bill.

They will be from all over the country and even abroad.

Jongleurs has been running comedy nights for more than 25 years, staging more than 60,000 comedy shows.

Maria Kempinska established and opened the first Jongleurs club back in 1983 in Battersea, London.

In 1985 Maria then met her business partner John Davy, and together they built the Jongleurs brand.

The gigs start on Sunday February 27, at 8pm, and continue at the same time on Sundays March 27, May 22, June 19, July 17, September 18 and October 30.

Tickets are priced at pounds 10 in advance and are available from Kirklees Box Offices, tel: 01484 223200 /01924 324501 or book online: www.kirklees.gov.uk/townhalls
