This book is intended to provide the reader with a view of the present status of nitration chemistry, with particular reference to synthetic methods and mechanisms. A short introductory chapter deals with general aspects, and includes references to a number of earlier reviews. A substantial chapter follows on the wide range of reagents and methods of aromatic nitration, covering the areas of acid-catalyzed electrophilic nitration, homolytic nitration, and nucleophilic nitration. Mechanisms of aromatic nitration (electrophilic, free radical, and nucleophilic) are explored in chapter 3. This chapter includes discussion of the possible role of single electron transfer in nitration and contains much of interest to physical and theoretical chemists as well as to synthetic chemists. The final chapter is devoted to aliphatic nitration and includes a section on nitration at heteroatoms.

Literature coverage extends to 1989, with some 700 references. This aesthetically pleasing and well produced book is likely to be of interest to academic and industrial researchers alike.
