Nigeria : N1.73BN AIRCRAFT commissioned by NCS.

A new aircraft has been commissioned by Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala in order to boost the capacity of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) to combat smuggling.

The cost of the aircraft is N1.73 billion.

Okonjo-Iweala noted that it would help the customs strengthen its aerial surveillance of the various terrains along the country s borders.

The Comptroller General of the Customs, Alhaji Abdullahi Dikko Inde was also congratulated by her upon the acquisition of the aircraft.

She added, The aircraft is an investment for which the country expects good returns.

The terrain around the country s borders includes difficult-to-access riverine and mountainous areas, which make monitoring and combating of the activities of the borders challenging. Several customs personnel have lost their lives or sustained injuries during attacks by smugglers in recent times, commented the minister.

The plane includes the state-of-the-art equipment and could fly long distances, added Captain Mbaya.
