Nigel's sweet side is heaven sent; NIGEL SLATER'S REAL FOOD Channel 4.

There are just too many cookery programmes on the television just now.

From first thing until late on, all our screens seem to be full of is food.

Why? Television bosses like them because they are easy to make, cost very little and at least one person in most households has to cook.

They've tried every formula to whet our appetites, from cookery quizzes to competitions, and even large ladies on motorbikes.

Nigel Slater, however, is a breath of fresh air - or should that be a waft of early-morning baking.

He is fun, enjoyable to watch and doesn't need port to keep him talking.

And, just like me, he has a sweet tooth.

As he said last night: "Of all my food-related passions, ice-cream is the most indulgent, regardless of time of day or time of year.

"I can eat a whole tub sitting in bed watching an episode of er."

Perhaps more information than we needed, but you get the point.

The third episode in this eight-part series was a hedonistic delight.

Examples of over indulgence included an ice-cream sundae with a glossy chocolate sauce and deep fried ice-cream - a favourite invented by the Victorians.

Fingers of sponge sprinkled into ice-cream with a layer of caramel then oven- baked reminded him of treacle pudding and trifle.

For his finale Nigel made a buttery - hot apple sauce with Calvados poured over "big juicy warm croissants" stuffed with caramel ice-cream.

Pure heaven.
