CONWY'S Nick Lofthouse finished in a share of second place on 287, five behind Will Jones from Oswestry in the Clwyd Open, played over 72 holes at Prestatyn and Wrexham at the weekend.

Plus-one player Jones set up victory on the first day at Prestatyn with rounds of 67-69 to lead by three from Alex Baker from the Vale of Glamorgan with Neath's Craig Melding third on 140.

Prestatyn member David Boote, who plays out of Walton Heath, shared fourth place on 141 with Geraint Jones of Royal St David's and Nathan Humphreys of Monmouth, while scratchman Lofthouse was next on 142 after a pair of 71s alongside Richard Bentham from St Pierr, who had a best of the afternoon 67, and Jack Bush of Morlais Castle.

On the second day at Wrexham Otto Mand from the Greenmeadow club near Cwmbran posted the best morning round of 69 with Lofthouse and Niall Johnston from Woburn Sands just a stroke behind to close the gap on Jones, who opened his second day with a 73.

But Jones then added another 73 in the afternoon for a total of 282, while Lofthouse could only manage a 75 and Mand a 74 to finish level on 287. Benthan was fourth on 290 after shooting 76-72 on the second day.

Mand's second day total of 143 was two better than Lofthouse with Johnson third on 145 after a countback. Wrexham plus-one player Rhodri Fieldhouse finished on 291 to finish fifth, a stroke behind Bentham, and his club-mate Alyn Torrence shared seventh on 294 with Melding.

Plus-two player Boote faded on the second day with rounds of 76-78 as did Harlech plus-one player Geraint Jones, who shot 79-80.

Meanwhile, Nefyn's Alwyn Thomas won the Caernarfonshire Scratch Championship at Conwy with a total of 148, three clear of host club players Gareth Williams and Lee Jones, with another home player James Tottey fourth on 152.

Thomas, who plays off plus-one, had a pair of 74s to also win the best gross prize for the morning round, while two-handicapper Williams had a first round 81, but posted a 70 in the afternoon to win both the gross and nett prizes. Plus-two player Jones shot 77-74 and one-handicapper Tottey a pair of 76s. Nick Macara, a 10-handicap player at the North Wales club, won the nett prize with a total of 137. His 65 in the morning left him seven clear of Conwy four-handicapper Jordan Roberts, then he added a 72 in the afternoon to beat Roberts (72-73) by eight. Gareth Williams (79-68) was third on 147 with Bull Bay's David Parry (76-71).
