Nicholl out in Lions purge.

Manager Jimmy Nicholl was among 32 Millwall staff axed in a desperate cost-cutting clearout yesterday.

And the New Den fall-guy admitted: "I knew it was coming three weeks ago but there was no way I was going to quit."

Former Lions boss John Docherty, who led Millwall into the old First Division nine years ago, was reappointed manager at Nicholl's expense last night.

Docherty's first task was to work out, with administrator David Buchler, which 12 players will follow Nicholl out of the Second Division club's door.

Millwall are pounds 10 million in debt and Nicholl, who will consult his lawyers over his dismissal, said last night: "I even knew who they were going to bring in to replace me.

"The financial situation is very bad. Without more supporters through the turnstiles, the club won't survive.

"They are losing pounds 250,000-a-month and there are some highly-paid players among the 36 playing staff."

Nicholl was sacked virtually a year to the day since he stepped in when Mick McCarthy answered the Republic of Ireland's SOS.
