Neziri: only one foreign investor wished to buy land.
Economy Minister Bekim Neziri said that due to a lack of interest by foreign investors in buying land in the technological and industrial development zones, the Government decided in March to bring back the previous regulations on leasing and putting land under concession management.
He explained that in 2014, at a meeting with foreign investors from Turkey, it was requested of the authorities to make sure foreign companies were allowed to buy land in the technological and industrial development zones, based on the stated interest of a Turkish company that pledged to hire more than 2,500 people.
"The Government and the Ministry of Economy considered the idea and in December 2014 decided to modify the law to make this possible to foreign companies. But since these legal modifications started taking effects, only Weibo Group took the opportunity and bought land in the zone in Rankovce at an online public bidding. No other foreign company has so far took interest in buying land and therefore the Government decided to reinstate the former law," Neziri said.
He stressed that the analyses they made with investors showed that the possibility of buying land in Macedonia had had no effect on their decision to invest.
