Newt ends bid for US presidency; POLITICS.

Byline: MIRROR REPORTER

NEWT Gingrich ended his bid to be the Republican nominee for US president yesterday.

He badly trailed Mitt Romney in polls and his campaign had piled up debts of EUR3.3million.

Mr Gingrich, 68, fell short of endorsing the front-runner but said voters had a clear choice in November's general election between President Barack Obama and the former Massachusetts governor.

He added: "I am asked sometimes is Mitt Romney conservative enough? And my answer is simple - compared to Barack Obama? "This is not a choice between Mitt Romney and Ronald Reagan.

"This is a choice between Mitt Romney and the most radical, leftist president in American history."

Mr Gingrich had scaled back his campaigning for weeks after cutting staff.
