Newspapers Review: Dailies Focus on Israeli cabinet Meeting in East Jerusalem.
Al-Quds and Al-Ayyam reported on the special Israeli cabinet meeting held East Jerusalem to mark the annexation of East Jerusalem after its 1967 occupation,which Israel calls the unification of East and West Jerusalem. Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, Al-Ayyam and Al-Quds featured AbbasA' meeting with the Emir of Qatar. The headline in Al-Hayat Al-Jadida said, A'The President: No cut in communication with Israel, negotiations require bases and terms of reference.' Al-Ayyam printed a headline quoting observers:A'The Follow up Committee believesWashington will not object to the recognition of the independent state in September.A' Al-Quds main headline was on the Israeli government allocating 400 million Israeli shekels to turn East Jerusalem into a Jewish city. With the June 6, 1967 war anniversary approaching, Al-Hayat al-Jadida said Israel is takingprecautions in case of violent protests to commemorate that day. The papers also reported on the events in Syria and the killings at the hands of Syrian President AssadA's forces. Just as its front page main headline, Al-Quds editorial discussed the Israeli cabinet meetingat DavidA's Citadel at Jaffa Gate in JerusalemA's Old City. Under the headline, A'A new Israeli provocation,A' the paper wrote that the meeting and the allocation of money to turn East Jerusalem into a Jewish city A'shows that Israel has sealed shut the door to any effort to revive the peace process.A' It said that this Israeli move is not only a step against the peace process, it is also a violation of international law that says Jerusalem is an occupied city.
