Mouth care is a relatively niche category, accounting for just 1% of total OTC remedies retail value sales in the US, but it is increasingly important for a growing number of consumers. Symptomatic treatment of periodontal disease, dry mouth (xerostomia), and canker sores (stomatitis) are the most common indications for OTC adult mouth care, and these ailments are more frequent than ever as a result of demographic and lifestyle developments.

Competitive Landscape

Although Church & Dwight maintained its number one status in adult mouth care in 2015, its lead over the review period dwindled considerably, down to less than one percentage point. The companys 2009 retail value share of 35% declined to just 27% in 2015. Church & Dwights leading brand Orajel lost its top position to GlaxoSmithKlines Biotene in 2015. Sales of Orajel, an oral pain relief brand, have declined steadily since the company acquired it from Del Pharmaceuticals in 2011. As the top provider of products formulated for oral pain relief, Church & Dwight will take the brunt of declines as consumers seek alternative ways to relieve stomatitis and toothache.
