Newcastle sign South African prop Hurter.

SOUTH AFRICA prop Marius Hurter has joined Premiership champions Newcastle in a three-year deal.

Hurter, who has 13 caps and was a member of the 1995 World Cup-winning squad, will arrive at the end of October when he ends his spell with Western Province.

Newcastle director of rugby Rob Andrew (left) also announced the signing of winger Michael Wood, 21, from West Hartlepool, prop Ian Peel, 22, from Wharfedale, and full-back Peter Massey, 23, from Moseley, but confirmed they had lost flanker Pat Lam to Northampton.

Western Samoan ace Lam, who had a year left of his contract, has agreed a three-year deal with Northampton.

Andrew said the offer for Lam came "out of the blue" and added: "Pat was outstanding here but the decision was made in the best interests of the club."
