Newcastle United player ratings: Hayden impresses as Rondon misses big chances; Newcastle United took on Crystal Palace at St James' Park with the home team looking to secure survival with a win.

Byline: Lee Ryder

Newcastle United took on Crystal Palace at St James' Park looking for the points that would confirm Premier League survival.

The Magpies made changes as Fabian Schar and Ki returned to the side at the expense of Paul Dummett and Mo Diame -- but Rafa Benitez retained his front three of Miguel Almiron, Ayoze Perez and Salomon Rondon for the visit of Palace.

And they went on the offensive in the first half after Palace made a bright start. Rondon had a goal ruled out for offside with Matt Ritchie stung the palms of Vicente Guiaita with a fizzing drive after some fine approach play.

It was the story of the first half as United dominated most of the play but couldn't convert -- with Rondon also seeing a snap shot from close range saved by Vicente Guiaita and heading over from close range.

For Palace, Wilfried Zaha was largely quiet but did get to the byline to fizz in a fine cross which was not converted.

These are Lee Ryder 's first half merit marks from St James' Park.

A spectator for long periods. But steady enough.

An improved display from the US international and almost unlocked the door for Rondon to score a back post header.

His return brought some composure as he brought the ball out of defence well with over 25 passes.

A couple of important clearances but not the pick of the defence.

Steady display as he tried to bypass Palace midfield with his trademark long passes.

Forced Guaita into a fine save with a powerful drive. Always busy but his corners were not always effective.

Looked a lot more impressive than at Arsenal on Monday. Some neat tackles.

Managed to get forward and fire a shot straight at the keeper.

Not at his best but did see a shot deflected over before the break.

Had the ball in the net once but denied by the flag. Sent a header wide and shot straight at the keeper from close range. Not at his sharpest.

Didn't click in the final third during frustrating 45 minutes.
