New-type riot squad make debut at police parade.

TOKYO, May 25 Kyodo

A new operations force to combat various crimes under the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) riot squad made its first appearance Friday at an annual parade held in Tokyo.

The new force, called the multilateral operations force, which was launched in April, has some 350 members in four squads, including a motorcycle group which conducts initial investigations.

Takeshi Noda, superintendent general of the MPD, said in a speech to the 2,100 police officers taking part in the parade, ''The MPD riot police are achieving brilliant success, as they are playing an active part in combating international organized crimes as well as small offenses such as purse snatching.''

''I expect the squad to carry on maintaining public order and peace in the metropolitan area,'' he said.
