New Standards

The Nation Mobility Equipment Dealers Association has several significant developments for 2012. First, every dealer member of NMEDA is now required to participate in the Quality Assurance Program (QAP)! It's official. As of March 1, 2012 all dealer members are qualified under the NMEDA Quality Assurance Program. This is something of which NMEDA is very proud. What this means to the consumers is a greater degree of customer service, safety and reliability. With all of our dealers enrolled in QAP it means that when you see the NMEDA logo you can be assured that you are getting a mobility dealer that adheres to the highest standards for safety and business practices established in our industry. NMEDA will be working hard to maintain those high standards and promote them to consumers, government agencies, third party payers, and health care professionals. One NMEDA, one standard of excellence.

What does this mean to you, our customers? It means that every NMEDA dealer is audited at least once a year to ensure they are providing customers with the high business standards set for the automotive mobility industry. These standards include:

* An annual inspection/audit process to ensure compliance to NMEDA Guidelines, Americans with Disabilities Act, and Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards

* 24 Hour Emergency Service

* Product liability and Garage Keepers Insurance (to further ensure that the products you purchase and your property is protected from unforeseen events while in the care of a NMEDA dealer)

* The dealer has an ADA compliant facility large enough to accommodate large power chairs and the safe operation of any lift or ramp inside the facility

* They have training certificates on file for all products they sell and service

* The each dealer has the proper tools to do the work right

* That each dealer has a quality control manual and that their records are up to date and in order. This ensures that customers will always know what has been serviced on their vehicle, when it was serviced and by whom

Building Awareness

Other exciting news at NMEDA this year is that we are all celebrating National Mobility Awareness Month the entire month of May. The purpose is to educate the public that people with disabilities constitute the second largest minority group in the United States. Over 18 million people in the U.S. and Canada have mobility issues. Six million of them are veterans. We also want to create awareness that there are mobility equipment manufacturers, dealers, certified driver rehabilitation specialists and other professionals in their communities dedicated to improving the lives of people with disabilities.

As part of the celebration we're looking for Local Heroes all across North America to tell us their story and have the chance to win a wheelchair accessible vehicle. With the help of Toyota, Chrysler, SanTan Honda Superstore and BraunAbility, VMI, Bruno and B&D Independence, we are giving away three custom vehicles. If you know someone who is dealing with and overcoming their mobility challenges on a daily basis, submit their story as a Local Hero and they'll be eligible to win. We also need your help in spreading the word. Tell your family, friends and clients about National Mobility Awareness Month and ask them to get involved. When we work together we can get life moving forward for everyone.

Local Heroes are eligible to submit their stories online as a two to three minute video or up to 400 words and a picture now. We encourage you to share your story with friends, family and co-workers and ask people to vote for you. Online voting for Local Heroes began on April 1, the more votes you receive, the better chance of winning. The promotion closes on May 13, 2012 and the vehicles will be given away the end of the month.
