New skippers in two counties.

Byline: PAT NOLAN

FIONN FITZGERALD has been named as the Kerry senior football captain for 2018.

It was always expected he would get the nod for the role with Kerry one of the few counties that still reserve the honour for a representative of the county champions.

Dr Crokes nominated the 27-year-old after clubmate Johnny Buckley led the county this year.

Fitzgerald captained the side in the latter part of this year's League campaign when Buckley was unavailable and lifted the New Ireland Cup after Kerry beat Dublin in the NFL final.

He also lifted the Sam Maguire Cup jointly with club and county teammate Kieran O'Leary when Kerry last won the All-Ireland in 2014.

Meanwhile, Mattie Donnelly is the new Tyrone captain following Sean Cavanagh's retirement. Peter Harte was appointed vice-captain.
