New products at ASMS 2004.

At ASMS, Agilent presented its HPLC-Chip MS technology, which it previewed earlier this year at its Pittcon press conference. The reusable, microfluidics-based polymer chips, which measure 1 in. x 2.5 in., eliminate the use of columns and act as an electrospray ionization tip. According to Agilent, the chips' advantages include ease of use and improved reliability and productivity, and integrated nanoflow LC separations with electrospray MS connection and spray tips. The chips are inserted into an interface module that can be mounted on Agilent's 1100 LC and LC/MS ion trap MS systems. The first application is proteomics, with additional applications planned for pharmaceutical manufacturing, food safety testing, environmental analysis and homeland security. Agilent expects the first chips and interface module to be available in the late fall for the Agilent 1100 Series LC.

Agilent also introduced an enhanced version of its LC/ MSD TOF, which it introduced at last year's ASMS (see IBO 6/ 15/03). This version can directly interface with Agilent's capillary electrophoresis ChemStation software, facilitating CE-TOF MS analysis. It is now compatible with Agilent's APPI source and 1100 Series isocratic and quaternary pumps, and is currently shipping. In addition, Agilent launched new protein confirmation software for the system. It is available now.

For protein identification, Agilent announced a new protein integration solution, consisting of instrumentation, software, columns and methods protocols. It is available for the XCT plus or XCT ion trap MS instruments. The system emphasizes ease of use with several automated features. It is currently available with prices ranging from $300,000 to $330,000 depending on the MS.

Applied Biosystems introduced new software, a new laser and new reagents at the conference. The new MALDI imaging software and fast high-repetition solid state Nd:YAG laser are designed for the Applied Biosystems/MDS Sciex QSTAR XL Hybrid LC/MS/MS quadrupole TOF MS System. US pricing is $380,000 for the QSTAR XL, $185,000 for the MALDI source with new laser and $10,000 for the tissue imaging technology. Designed for the study of metabolism and drug distribution, the new software and laser enable 2D and 3D images of low molecular weight drug compounds in tissue samples. The system is scheduled to begin shipping this fall.

Applied Biosystems also introduced the iTRAQ Reagent Technology, a peptide-based labeling technique for relative and absolute quantification of four multiplexed samples simultaneously. The technology works with the QSTAR and Q TRAP MS Systems using new Pro QUANT software, as well as with the 4700 Proteomics Discovery System. Unlike ICAT, which quantifies only those proteins containing the amino acid cysteine, iTRAQ reagents can label all peptides. The Pro QUANT software is designed for automated analysis of data generated by use of the iTRAQ reagents with LC/ MS. It also links with the Celera Discovery System databases.

Waters had the most MS instrument introductions. The company unveiled its latest Q-TOE the Micro QTOE Premier MS, a hybrid quadrupole, orthogonal acceleration TOF-MS for automated exact mass measurement of precursor and fragment ions. The API/MALDI MS/MS platform includes the programmable Dynamic Range Enhancement feature that extends quantification and exact mass measurement and Waters' Traveling Wave ion optics and collision cell. It is also available with dual ESI Lockspray. It is expected to ship in the fourth quarter with pricing starting at around $500,000.

Also for proteomics applications, Waters introduced a new benchtop MALDI-TOF MS, the MALDI Micro MX MS. It features parallel post source decay analysis for the parallel fragmentation and analysis of multiple precursor ions. Emphasizing ease of use, the system is designed for molecular weight measurements of proteins, peptides, polysaccharides, nucleic acids, synthetic polymers and small molecules. With prices starting at $200,000, it is scheduled to start shipping at the end of July.

Waters also launched the nano-version of its ACQUITY UPLC system, the HPLC system that was introduced earlier this year at Pittcon (see IBO 3/15/04). The nanoACQUITY Ultra Performance LC System is a direct-nanoflow HPLC system optimized for high-resolution separations and nanoflow rates without flow spitting. Waters expects the system to ship in the fourth quarter.

The company also introduced pairings of the new products as complete systems. It offers the Q-TOF Premier MS paired with its ACQUITY or nanoACQUITY UPLC Systems and MassLynx 4.0 software as a new LC/ MS/MS system.

Waters also introduced the Protein Expression System consisting of the Micromass Q-TOF Premier MS, the nanoACQU1TY UPLC, Protein Express columns and new Expression

Informatics tools for MassLynx 4,0. Designed for multiplexed proteomies, the new LC/MS system can quantitatively measure protein expression changes and perform enhanced qualitative protein identification in the same run. The Protein Expression System is sold with methods, reference data and support and training with a price tag starting in the mid-$600,000s. It will ship in the first quarter of 2005.

Bruker Daltonics showcased the ultrOTOF-Q, a next-generation ESI-Q-q-TOF MS that updates the company's BioTOF-Q, which was introduced in 2001 (see /BO 5/31/ 01). Featuring a resolution of greater than 20k in normal mode and greater than 40k in Multipass mode, the system offers improved MS/MS sensitivity and sequence coverage. Included is Bruker's Focus technology, which increases resolution over a broad mass range and can help gather structural and mass information for natural products and metabolites. The ultrOTOF-Q is designed for expression proteomics, biomarker discovery and small molecule metabolomics analysis.

Also introduced at ASMS was the Proteineer-LC, a new LC-ESI-MALDI for LC-based expression proteomics workflows. Working in tandem with Bruker's Anchorchip sample plate technology and WARP-LC software, the Proteineer-LC can achieve an LC-MALDI-MS/MS workflow with its TOF/TOF systems at high sensitivity.

In addition, Bruker showed off its PharmaTools product suite for the drug industry, which includes Compass OA, an open access software environment, as well as new library search capabilities. Part of the suite is the new Metabolic Profiler--a collaboration between Bruker Daltonics and Bruker BioSpin--for use with MS or NMR, and installation qualification, operational qualification and performance verification validation products.

Bruker also announced new capabilities for its ClinProt platform solution. Among the additions are weak anion exchange, cation exchange and immobilized metal affinity capture beads. Also new is the MagAB nano-particle, allowing expanded bead use for research in interaction proteomics, the study of how multiple pathways affect a cell. For biomarker discovery, Bruker released the ClinProt 3D platform, using HPLC followed by ESI-TOF or ESI-FT MS, and featuring ClinPro Tools 3D software.

Bruker declined to discuss pricing or shipping details.

Thermo introduced the MDLC LTQ, a high-end LC/MS that combines GE Bio-Sciences' Ettan MDLC with Thermo's LTQ linear ion trap MS (see IBO 3/15/03). According to a Thermo representative, the MDLC LTQ is a "big brother" to the ProteomeX LTQ linear ion trap (see IBO 3/31/04) and is designed to address increased instrument flexibility needs of proteomics researchers. The conference marked the introduction of the Ettan MDLC, which is intended to complement 2D electrophoresis. It provides micropreparative protein prefractionation and nanoscale separation. The Ettan MDLC is offered as a standalone instrument as needed and is currently shipping. The integrated MDLC LTQ system will not be released to users for a few more months.

Also introduced by Thermo was ProMass Deconvolution 2.0, a new LC/MS data-processing software system produced by Novatia. Thermo is the exclusive distributor of the ProMass for its Xcalibur data system platform.

Thermo declined to discuss specific product prices.
