New printers, prices from Apple.
Apple has improved the Apple Color Style Writer 2400 with several new features that enhance print quality, performance and convenience, and has lowered the price 18 percent in the U.S.
Among the new features of the Color Style Writer 2400 are Desktop Printing, and Watermarks. Desktop Printing lets users drag and drop files onto a printer icon on the desktop.
Watermarks lets users place words such as draft or confidential on the background of a page.
The Color Style Writer 2400 now offers 720 by 360 dots per inch true black printing at up to five pages per minute. It is available at a suggested retail price of $429.
In a related move, Apple broke the 1,000 price performance barrier for high-quality desktop laser printing with the LaserWriter 4/600 PS, a new monochrome laser printer for Apple Macintosh and Power Macintosh computers offering 600 DPI Postscript printing.
"With the LaserWriter 4/ 600 PS, we've made the outstanding print quality found in our network laser printers available to the personal printer customer at an outstanding price," said Terry Bailey, senior director for Apple's printer products. "Apple is making Postscript printing more affordable than ever before for home, education and small business users. "
The LaserWriter 4/600 PS is capable of printing 106 line screens and 126 shades of gray, making it one of the best gray scale image printers of its type on the market.
"The addition of a 600 dpi personal laser printer rounds out Apple's printer line nicely, " said Robert J. Fennell, director and principal analyst with the Document Management Group at Dataquest.
The LaserWriter 4/600 PS is available immediately worldwide at a suggested $929 retail. The LaserWriter 41600 PS ships with a power cord, toner cartridge, software and a 100-sheet paper tray.
Apple has brought out the Color StyleWriter 2200, a color ink jet printer that's small and lightweight enough to fit in any standard briefcase while offering rich text and graphics. The StyleWriter 2200 is designed to complement Apple Macintosh PowerBook, but can also be used on the desktop with Macintosh and Power Macintosh computers.
The unit weighs a little more than 3 pounds and measures less than 12 inches across and 2.2 inches high. It will retail for $419 and includes all the features found on the desktop series.
"The profile of today's business professionals is changing dramatically as technology evolves," said Larry Jamieson, associate director of electronic printer services at BIS Strategic Decisions. "Business executives have always wanted color for emphasis and presentations, but have required monochrome printers for most applications. A portable color printer fills the need for occasional color printing on the desktop and gives them more flexibility in their output without taking up additional desk space."
