New potatoes get under way.

Cornish potato growers are hoping to start lifting the new crop at the end of the month, said the British Potato Council.

From now on the weather will play a vital part in how various sources market their crop as the season moves towards the period where the UK takes over from the Mediterranean.

Jersey growers said early growth indicated a heavy crop.

Egyptian imports are now slowing down, reaching an expected 15,000 tonnes, reduced due to brown rot.

Israel is in full swing although total European export estimates have been reduced to 180,000 tonnes, 40,000 tonnes more than last year.

The Cyprus spring crop is under way, although there has been a gap of some three weeks following the winter crop.
