New national water policy to be finalised by March 2012: Bansal.

New Delhi, July 13 (ANI): Pawan Kumar Bansal, who assumed charge as the new Water Resources Minister here on Wednesday, said that a new national water policy would be finalised by the end of March 2012

Taking to reporters here, Bansal said his priorities would include finalization of the new national water policy.

He also said that a lot of preparatory work has already been done in this direction, including having detailed discussion with academia, NGOs and social groups.

"Now, the discussion will take place with Panchayati Raj institutions," he added.

He further it would be his priority to enhance water usage efficiency in the country, particularly with respect to crop irrigation.

Regarding the interlinking of rivers, he said the ministry wouild take forward the Ken- Betwa link to which the Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh Governments have given their assent.

On Tuesday, the Prime Minister, Dr, Manmohan Singh, changed some members in his Council of Ministers and altered some portfolios.

Bansal had earlier held charge of the Water Resources Ministry between June 14, 2009 to January 18, 2011. (ANI)
