New market study, "Cafes/Bars in Romania", has been published.

[USPRwire, Mon Sep 21 2015] The Romanian economic growth trend from 2013 was confirmed by the progress registered in 2014 and this was also visible in the consumers' attitude towards spending in cafes/bars. With more optimism about the economic environment and its development, all available formats for this category saw growth in 2014. Cafes and bars are very popular businesses amongst Romanian entrepreneurs. Because they require a high level of involvement and control, in 2014 independents represented 97% of the outlets, accounting for 98% share of value sales and a slightly lower transactions share of only 96%. Cafes/bars showed quite high dynamics in terms of businesses' openings and closings.

Competitive Landscape

Starbucks was the brand which led cafes/bars sales in 2014 with a 1% value share of this very fragmented category. Romanian consumers, especially young ones, tend to embrace the products and services of strong global brands with high awareness. The same thing is happening with Starbucks, which for many customers is equivalent with specialist coffee shops. Eight out of the 12 existing outlets were present in Bucharest, the main centre of Romanian foodservice, and the other four in other important cities: Cluj-Napoca, Timisoara, Constanta and Iasi. Every new opening of Starbucks created a lot of buzz and interest, which was visible in the consolidated position of the brand in cafes/bars.

Industry Prospects

The increased optimism which came together with the improved results of the Romanian economy in 2013 and 2014 was also translated into the consumers' attitude towards spending for cafes/bars products. For the forecast period Bucharest is expected to remain the biggest generator of sales for this category, followed by the other main cities. The developing level of living and lifestyles will be visible in growing consumption value and purchase frequency. In the smaller cities customers' interest in cafes/bars is expected to remain occasional. In the countryside the level of services and the product offering are foreseen to remain basic.
