New gun laws for dealers.

Gun dealers who sell air weapons are being urged to register under new laws which come into force yesterday.

Section 31 of the Violent Crime Reduction Act 2006 requires all businesses who sell airguns to register with the police as firearms dealers.

Dealers will be accountable to the police - who will be able to withdraw registration.

The law applies to mail order sales at present but not private sales.

Superintendent David Coutts, Head of Administration of Justice at North Yorkshire Police said: "This is not just an administrative matter. It is an important element of public safety."
