New gun law now in force.

TOUGH new rules on the sale of airguns will be in place from today.

But campaigners have vowed to continue their battle to have airguns banned unless used for sports or pest control.

Shops who sell airguns must now be registered firearms dealers and all sales must be face-to-face.

Dealers will also have to record buyers' personal details and the type of weapon they have bought.

The legal age to buy an airgun will also go up from 17 to 18 - also applying to crossbows.

Justice Secretary Kenny MacAskill said: "Scottish communities have been crying out for action to rid their streets of weapons."

Firearms laws are made by the UK Parliament and the rules are part of Westminster's Violent Crime Reduction Act 2006.
