New family room also cleans up entry confusion.

When the back door sat forward of the front door at this fine old house in Spokane, it caused no small amount of confusion for arriving guests. Tired of ushering friends through a back hall off the kitchen instead of through the entry foyer, Christie and Mike Hinnen called in architect Steve Clark to help them reroute traffic.

Adjacent to the original back door and hallway, a small, seemingly tacked-on breakfast nook created some awkward roof pitches. Clark decided to remove the door and nook, and extend this area to create a new family and breakfast room off the kitchen. This not only solved the entry confusion, but also cleaned up the lines of the 60-year-old house.

To blend new with old, he repeated the main roof pitch, extending one side farther than the other. Inside, this roof treatment results in a cozy low ceiling along one wall. Clark also found the matching roof tile and leaded-glass windows. The new "back door" is now a room-brightening set of French doors off the far side of the addition. They face a leg of the driveway and no longer have the look of a front entry.
