New faces on veterans' panels.

As a result of the 2008 elections, the House and Senate Veterans' Affairs Committees have some new members in the 111th Congress.

Sen. Daniel K. Akaka (D-Hawaii) has retained the chairmanship of the Senate Committee on Veterans' Affairs, and Richard Burr (R-N.C.) is the panel's ranking Republican.

Rep. Bob Filner (D-Calif.) continues to chair the House Veterans' Affairs Committee, with Rep. Steve Buyer (R-Ind.) returning as its top Republican.

The two committees have jurisdiction over legislation and oversight of veterans programs, such as health care and medical treatment, vocational rehabilitation and education, disability compensation, GI bill education and job training, home loan guarantees, life insurance policies, a nationwide system of veterans cemeteries, and other matters related to the Department of Veterans Affairs.
