HM Treasury on Tuesday revealed that Lord Adonis has been proposed as the new chair of Crossrail 2, a new a railway which is expected to boost the economy by billions and support thousands of new jobs and homes.
The Mayor of London Sadiq Khan, Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne and Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin proposed Adonis for the role. The appointment of Adonis is subject to approval by the London Assembly and Transport for London Board.
Running south-west to north-east across London, Crossrail 2 could assist with the key challenge of overcrowding at London's main terminal stations while making a significant contribution to unlocking new housing growth in the capital.
Adonis commented "Without Crossrail 2 London will grind to a halt. There are no greater challenges facing London than overcrowding on the transport network and the city's acute housing crisis. Crossrail 2 will help tackle both. I am delighted to be nominated to be its chair, whilst continuing the vital work of the National Infrastructure Commission, and I look forward to making it happen."
