Emerald cargo, a subsidiary of Emerald Express Charters, will
inaugurate air cargo service from San Juan to the Caribbean Aug. 1,
reports Caribbean Business (June 11, 2008).. "The company will
invest about US$750,000 to initiate operations, which will include
operating a Russian manufactured Antonov-26 aircraft. It plans to put a
second Antonov-26 into service in October, involving additional
investment of US$190,000 and double air cargo capacity," said
general manager Elsie Adames. Recently, there have been announcements of
flight reductions by commercial airlines serving the Puerto Rico market,
which implies a reduction in air cargo capacity, something Adames sees
as an opportunity for Emerald to grow. Emerald has provided charter
services to Orlando and Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; Port-au-Prince, Haiti; and
Puerto Plata and Punta Cana, Dominican Republic. In the months to come,
Emerald will expand operations for passenger flights between Miami and
Nassau in the Bahamas, Adames said.
