New building dedicated in downtown Bridgeport.

Bridgeport Mayor Joseph P. Ganim joined People's Bank President David E. A. Carson in the dedication of 177 State Street as the new Port Authority building.

One floor of the 31,000-square-foot building will be occupied by the Bridgeport Port Authority which was formed in 1992 to implement the city's Waterfront Development Plan and supervise port operations. The building is owned by People's and its reutilization brings new jobs to the city's Downtown South Historic District.

Formerly the Barnum-Thompson building, the five-story structure was the last commissioned by P.T Barnum. Constructed in 1892, the masonry building is embellished with carved brownstone details. It overlooks McLevy Green, the city's public square in the heart of downtown.

The dedication ceremony featured the unveiling of an illustrative rendering of the new Port Authority building. Local business, government, and economic development officials, as well as lunchtime office workers attended the event. The ceremony ended with a brief walking tour of downtown historic buildings sponsored by the Downtown Special Services District.

To assist in re-utilizing 177 State Street and other bank-owned assets in the downtown area, People's Bank retained North American Realty Advisory Services, a Manhattan-based consulting firm.
