New body armour shown at UK arms fair.

A new type of body armour to be used by the

British military was unveiled at a controversial arms fair Wednesday.

The high-performance armour steel was on display at the Defence and

Security Equipment International (DSEi) exhibition at the ExCeL in east

The arms fair has been targeted by protesters who claim at least 14

delegations visiting it have come from countries defined as "authoritarian

regimes" by human rights groups.

They have expressed dismay that those invited include officials from

repressive countries.

Today UK Defence Minister Peter Luff visited the UK Capability Showcase at

DSEi where the new body armour - made from what is known as super bainite -

was being displayed, the Ministry of Defence said.

Inventors say super bainite has shown twice the strength of normal steel

armour in testing.

In a brief statement, Luff said: "This cutting-edge UK invention and the

manufacturing agreement mean that the UK now has its own onshore supply of

high-performance armour steel."

Super bainite has both military and civilian applications providing Tata

Steel with important export opportunities.

"The application of new, battle-winning technologies is what gives our

troops the edge. This demonstrates, once again, that investing in research and

development, in partnership with industry, means that our troops can have the

latest innovations in frontline equipment," Luff added.
