New bath opens to spa ... sliding gate gives privacy.
An unconventional expansion distinguishes this ranch-style house in
Menlo Park, California. Janine and Klaus Kramer designed and built a
bath, window wall, patio, and spa all in a visual line--expanding and
brightening their master bedroom in a way that effectively merges indoor
and outdoor areas. In the large center photograph, note how the walls
falnking the tub extend beyond fixed glass panes to run under the house
eaves and how the eave line is continued into the bath. A hidden door
cut into the left wall provides quick access to the spa from the large
tiled shower. (The spa can also be entered from the back garden.) A
glass door inside the shower keeps the exterior wooden door dry and less
likely to warp from moisture. Outside, the Kramers edged their secluded
patio with subtropical plants; surrounding trellises support kiwi and
passion vines. A 6- by 8-foot privacy door rolls along a heavy-duty
track bolted to a trellis beam.
