New Zealand's Hastings Brewery is registered

New Zealand's Hastings Brewery has become the first brewery in the world to achieve registration under the International Standards Organization's (ISO) standards for quality management systems.

The brewery has been audited and accredited by New Zealand's National Accreditation authority TELARC, which assesses compliance with the government's standards.

The standards are internationally recognized by industry, with general applications to all manufacturing and service industries.

Tony Davies, Hasting's manager, said that gaining the accreditation involved developing and instituting quality control programs and procedural manuals covering all aspects of the brewery's operations.

"This accreditation is an ongoing exercise," Davies said. "We not only audit the system ourselves, but will be reviewed by TELARC every six months, and be required to undergo a full audit by them every two years, to maintain registration.

"The systems we have in place are as much a company philosophy and managerial discipline as they are production related," Davies continued. "They are designed to instill full employee awareness of all quality aspects as well as total customer confidence in our products. In short, achieving such accreditation requires a total quality system to be in place, along with full commitment to ensure these systems are implemented."
