New York pub hosts Boxing Day at Seaport

North Star Pub, an authentic British pub in New York City's South Street Seaport, celebrated Boxing Day (December 26) this year by hosting St. Stephen's Day Mass, followed by the ninth annual Boxing Day party. During the party, food and clothing was collected and distributed to homeless familes, and everyone was offered free Bangers and Mash (sausages and mashed potatoes).

Father Larry McCormick and the congregants of Holy Trinity Parish of Teaneck, NJ, travelled to the North Star to conduct a mass for the feast of St. Stephen.

"I won't be a bit surprised if there are some raised eyebrows within the Christian community over our celebrating Mass in a pub," Father McCormick noted, "but the Deacon of our parish and I have had an ongoing love affair with the North Star, and wanted to join them in the act of sharing our relative wealth with men, women, and children whose Christmases have been less merry."

Following the Mass, the Pub launched its annual Boxing Day festivities. Last year, more than 600 people ate over a quarter-ton of the sausage and mashed potato dish--Bangers and Mash.

Additionally, everyone attending the party was given a Christmas cracker. When the ends of the cracker are pulled, it "cracks" loudly, and a paper hat, small toy and joke spill out.

A certificate was also given to those attendees who brought food or clothing to the pub for donation. Last year, more than 400 pounds of food and clothing were donated to the needy.

"A lot of people have had a very rough year," said North Star general manager Deven Black, "but we've been very fortunate. We wish there was no need for the clothes and food our customers donated, but we know this is the only Christmas a lot of people will see this year. We're happy to have Father McCormick and the members of Holy Trinity Parish join in our effort. I am sure they enjoyed the party after."
