New United States Cold Storage expansion pushed Laredo facility over 10 million cubic foot mark.

Another expansion at United States Cold Storage - Laredo will boost capacity at the sprawling Texas complex to more than 10 million cubic feet by the end of the year.

U.S.C.S. announced it is adding 1,740 million cubic feet of state-of-the-art freezer storage to its existing Plant III warehouse at 1602 Island in Laredo.

The addition will be fully racked with double deep select racks. The space will be capable of sustaining temperatures down to -20 degrees Fahrenheit, especially important for products that require Ultra Low temperature storage.

The expansion will also provide an additional eight refrigerated truck docks. Plant III, which housed the main office of the three plant U.S.C.S. - Laredo complex, already has five railroad sidings that can handle 10 cars because of its double track configuration.

Construction is expected to be completed by December 1, 1993 said Vice President Manager Luis Guardiola.

This latest expansion announcement follows the completion in April of 2.6 million cubic foot addition that included four convertible rooms capable of handling temperatures along a range of -20 to +40 degrees Fahrenheit.

That expansion boosted total capacity at Laredo to 9,310,000 cubic feet. The new Plant III will increase total cold storage capacity to 11,050,000 cubic feet.

In addition to providing state-of-the-art storage space, U.S.C.S. - Laredo serves America's fastest growing inland port with a computer-driven packaging line for precision mixing and poly-bagging of frozen fruits and vegetables. U.S.C.S. - Laredo, with its sophisticated U.S.D.A. inspection facilities, has become a major hub for meat exports to Mexico. Flexible ordering and rigorous inventory control are assured with an IBM System 36 computer system.
