New UQTR chair funded by Ciba.
NEW UQTR CHAIR FUNDED BY CIBA. Universite du Quebec a Trois-Rivieres (UQTR) and Ciba Specialty Chemicals have created the Ciba Specialty Chemicals Industrial Chair in Paper Chemicals. The main objective of this new chair is to optimize the possible uses of paper in printing. The holder of the chair is Dr. Francois Brouillette of the Department of Chemistry and Biology at the University. The basic funding of the chair will be provided by Ciba under a five-year renewable agreement whereby the University will receive C$ 150,000 annually for a total of C$ 750,000.The new industrial research chair will assist in the development of specialty chemical products for improving the properties of paper and in so doing tackle the main problems faced by printing companies. The various projects undertaken in the chair program will therefore seek to improve the printing quality of paper through the application of new and innovative specialty chemicals.
In addition to the funding, Ciba Specialty Chemicals will support the chair program through laboratory equipment loans, access to the company's research and production facilities, regular exchanges between researchers, and the participation of members of the chair program in activities of the company. Ciba will play an active role in the chair program and will lend its expertise in the chemistry of paper production, retention and drainage agents, and uniform sheet formation.
