New System Streamlines Utilization Management.

A new software-based information system reduced utilization management costs by 50% in a recent study by Sloans Lake Managed Care. During the study, Sloans Lake, Denver, used iAuth, a system developed by CustomMed Solutions Inc., to automatically transmit, respond, analyze and monitor clinical information for physical therapy requests from providers using fax-to-server technology.

The system collected clinical information, including severity, from providers and compared it to Sloans' clinical guidelines and CustomMed's severity adjusted database in reviewing requests. One of the biggest advantages of the new system was improved provider relations, Jay Nakashima, Sloans Lake vice president and chief information officer, said. "Surprisingly, doctors said they'd rather put in requests over the Internet than talk with a real person." he said.
