Ricks received 214 votes beating Peter Porter and Anne Carson who took 175 and 105 votes respectively. The post, which is held for five years, pays GBP5427 a year with an extra GBP30 each for lectures given three times a year.

A former fellow of Worcester College, Ricks established himself at Oxford as a scholar of the poet John Milton. He is also known for his love of the lyrics of Bob Dylan, reports The Guardian.
