New PS price hikes emerge.

A new round of price increases that could result in 3|cents~/lb higher prices for polystyrene resins was taking shape at press time. As of yet, industrywide support had not been gained. Meanwhile, PVC suppliers aimed to increase resin prices again last month, generally by 1|cent~/lb.

PS PRICE INITIATIVE UNDER WAY

A new round of PS resin price increases initiated by Dow Chemical has been supported by Novacor Chemical and by BASF, which finalized its acquisition of Mobil Chemical's PS resins business on July 1. All three called for increases of 3|cents~/lb across the board on standard PS resin grades, effective September 1.

In general, sources at these companies attribute the increases to the supply/demand situation and the need for increased profit margins. Says one, "Demand has been exceptionally strong--with sales volume up 14-15% through the second quarter compared with last year at this time. In addition, there is a need to get higher returns due to increased investment in recycling, environmental compliance, etc."

Although other key suppliers, including Huntsman Chemical, Fina Oil & Chemical, and Chevron Chemical, indicate they are considering similar increases, none had made any announcements at press time.

PVC RESIN UP AGAIN

PVC resin suppliers looked to increase prices generally by another 1|cent~/lb last month. At least one key player, Vista Chemical Co., aimed for 2|cents~/lb. Suppliers have attempted to raise PVC resin tabs by issuing 1|cent~/lb increases on a month-to-month basis essentially since March. Suppliers say they have been generally successful in implementing 3|cents~ out of the total 5|cents~/lb combined increases issued thus far.

One source ventured that based on the current supply/demand situation, suppliers have a good chance of gaining another 2|cents~/lb before the end of September.

HIGHER PRICES FOR UNSATURATED POLYESTER

Selling prices were reported higher at press time for unsaturated polyester resins following recent industrywide price increases. This initiative appears to have been led by Reichhold Chemical, which called for a 2|cents~/lb across-the-board increase effective July 1. Most other suppliers quickly followed with the same announcement. Cook Composites and Ashland Chemical issued similar increases but with start dates of July 13 and 15, respectively.

Suppliers indicate that the move is largely the result of price hikes in almost all key raw materials--particularly styrene and maleic anhydride.

PET PRICE HIKES IN PLACE

Industrywide price increases on PET resins reported last month have been fully implemented, according to key suppliers. All major players called for increases of 3|cents~/lb on all grades of bottle/packaging PET resins, effective July 15. The move was attributed to a tight supply/demand situation and cost pressure from raw materials.

PP PRICES SOMEWHAT FIRMER

By mid-summer, PP tabs were reported relatively stable, if not a bit firmer, following suppliers' earlier attempts to hike prices 3|cents~/lb. Suppliers first called for these increases in May, but it took until now for prices to have moved up at all. "I would say we moved PP resin prices up by 1|cent~/lb across the board," a source at one key supplier told PLASTICS TECHNOLOGY.

Some industry sources maintain that supply is still in excess, making further PP price hikes unlikely. The gap could grow further following the addition of major new capacity from Amoco Chemical Co., which started production in July at its new 300-million-lb/yr PP unit at its Chocolate Bayou, Texas, site.

Nevertheless, sources at two major players indicated that while their companies haven't taken any action yet, another attempt to boost PP prices could emerge this month or next. Says one, "Profit margins have dropped a lot more than we had imagined. There's no rationale for PP resin prices to be so low."
