New Middlesex MBA develops professionals for 2020.
DUBAI - The Dubai Strategic Plan 2020 lists finance, transport and logistics, tourism and retail as the major growth drivers of the local economy over the next decade, signifying a clear need for expertise in these key areas.
This week, Middlesex University Dubai launched its new innovative MBA programme with specialisations in Finance, Operations & Logistics, Business Excellence, International Business, and Marketing, with the aim of supporting the development of these key sectors and industries.
Speaking at the launch event held at Emirates Towers, Professor Raed Awamleh, Director of Middlesex University Dubai, said: "Under the vision and strategic direction of the government, the UAE has witnessed unprecedented growth, which will continue through further diversification into new areas. The Middlesex MBA has been designed specifically to support the development of professional skills in these areas. This development will enhance business performance and, subsequently, contribute positively to economic prosperity at the micro and macro levels".
The new MBA with specialisations has been introduced to respond to the need for focused skills and management competencies. It complements the general MBA programme, and has a strong emphasis on "learning by doing" and industry interaction. "A unique feature of the Middlesex MBA are the Applied Learning Experiences and Executive Skills Development workshops which include team building and leadership training, business strategy simulations, corporate governance projects and a week long residential field trip to cities such as Paris and Milan, to study specific industries" said Dr Cedwyn Fernandes, the MBA Programme Co-ordinator. "Students participate in a number of hands-on activities which enable them to experience and put into practice what is taught inside the classroom", he added. The Middlesex MBA culminates in a dissertation based on the student's specialisation and area of interest.
In addition to the learning experience, the MBA programme provides networking opportunities for professionals through a variety of events such as industry guest speakers, product development competitions, and business forums. Given the emphasis on developing practitioners, the underlying objective of the MBA programme is to combine theoretical rigour with practice and provide students with tools which they can use in the workplace. The new Middlesex MBA with speacialisations can be completed in one year (full time) or two years (part time) and all classes are held from 6:30 to 9:30 pm on weekdays. In addition to five core MBA modules, students complete two modules in their field of specialisation, and a thesis under the supervision of faculty member in the relevant area. Four Applied Learning Experiences, including an international field trip, and four Executive Skills Development Workshops are also an integral part of the programme.
Middlesex University Dubai is the first overseas campus of the internationally renowned Middlesex University in London. The campus which opened in January 2005, has over 1,750 students from nearly 90 nationalities and offers 24 undergraduate and 7 postgraduate programmes in a wide variety of subject areas.
