New Zealand-based web development company FrisianStyle Production has announced a new Twitter service,, which extends the 140-character limit using Unicode characters.

According to the company, the service utilises Unicode characters from many languages, including Cyrillic, Thai, Arabic and Hiragana, which resemble two or more normal letters. A javascript engine compresses text in the background and delivers a user-friendly experience.

For example, in the word 'lions' two characters are saved by replacing the vowels with a Cyrillic letter resembling 'io', followed by the Unicode symbol for nanosecond 'ns'.

'Maxitweets' can be up to 200 characters long, an increase of nearly 50%.
