New Jersey Natural Gas Expands Energy Assistance Program; Gift of Warmth Fund Offers More Help to Customers in Need.

WALL, N.J.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 22, 2000

New Jersey Natural Gas Company (NJNG), the principal subsidiary of New Jersey Resources, (NYSE: NJR) is increasing its efforts to help customers in need to stay warm this winter.

NJNG has doubled the corporate match to its Gift of Warmth Fund and will provide the opportunity for a second grant from the fund, which helps qualified customers who cannot afford to pay their heating bills.

Now in its thirteenth year, the NJNG's Gift of Warmth Fund has helped nearly 9,800 families since its inception, by distributing an estimated $2.46 million to customers in need. The fund is supported by donations and matching funds from the Company. Each year, NJNG asks for donations from the Company's customers, shareowners and employees. This year, the NJNG Foundation has increased the amount it will match from $40,000 to $80,000.

Contributions to the fund are tax deductible and 100 percent of the donations from customers, employees and shareowners go directly to help those in need. The Gift of Warmth Fund assists customers who have exhausted other forms of energy assistance, as well as those who are experiencing financial difficulties because of illness, high medical expenses, or other unanticipated circumstances. The fund is administered by the United Way of Monmouth County and community agencies within the Company's service territories.

NJNG advises customers who are experiencing financial hardship to first contact the Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP) for assistance with their utility bills, by calling 1-800-510-3102.

To apply for Gift of Warmth assistance, customers should contact the appropriate agency in their county of residence:

New Jersey Natural Gas also offers other forms of assistance to help customers manage their winter heating costs, including energy savings tips and an easy-to-enroll budget plan to help spread out yearly charges over 12 equal payments.
