New Hampshire's first brewpub opens

June, 1991, will see the opening of New Hampshire's first brewpub--the Portsmouth Brewery--in the historic seaport of Portsmouth. Construction started last week on a 220-seat restaurant and microbrewery, which will be located on Market Street in the heart of downtown Portsmouth.

The brewery will occupy two floors, with a bar and full-service restaurant on the main floor, and a more rustic rathskeller downstairs. The on-premise brewery, built by JV Northwest, will be visible from both floors and will produce a broad range of ales and lagers, featuring six different beers on tap at all times.

Owners Janet Egelston, her husband Mark Metzger and brother Peter Egelston also run the Northampton Brewery, a popular brewpub in western Massachusetts, now in its fourth year of operation.

"We've learned a lot over the past four years about building and operating a brewpub, and we're looking forward to applying those lessons in Portsmouth," explained Janet Egelston. "We'll be doing things right from day one, instead of figuring it all out as we go along. Just like in Northampton, our menu will be extensive, varied and moderately-priced."

"Portsmouth is a great town," Metzger added. "We've been made to feel quite welcome here. Everyone in town is very excited about our project, and we're looking forward to joining an already thriving restaurant community. There has been a lot of interest in microbreweries around here lately. It will be nice to be the first, but what it comes down to is what we'll offer to folks in Portsmouth: great beer, great food and a fun place to consume it."

Brewing operations at both breweries will be supervised by brewmaster Peter Egelston. Brewing duties in Northampton will be taken over by Rick Quackenbush, who is presently assistant brewer there.
