New England's down payment on the future: five steps in five years to confront the climate threat: growing climate crisis--a call to action.

Global climate change is the greatest environmental challenge of our generation, demanding transformation at all levels of our society and economy. In addition to national and international action over the long term, we need immediate action on the regional, state and local levels to make an essential down payment on the deep and pervasive reforms needed to curb global warming in the decades to come.

1 STEP ONE: End the era of highway expansion and shift to a new paradigm in which the region invests at least 75 percent of its transportation funds in public transportation and compact, transit-oriented development.

2 STEP TWO: Invest $1 billion in new energy efficiency resources--drawing on multiple sources of revenue, including emerging carbon auctions and new markets and incentives for energy efficiency.

3 STEP THREE: Build 2,000 megawatts of new wind power in New England.

4 STEP FOUR: Shut clown at least two regional coal-fired power plants or convert them to cleaner fuels.

5 STEP FIVE: Enact climate legislation that mandates reductions in global warming pollution and requires review of climate impacts in state permitting and infrastructure decisions.

FIVE STEPS in FIVE MINUTES

The Five Things You Can Do to Help Make CLF's Climate Vision a Reality

1. ACT NOW and urge your elected official to take bold action to curb climate change. Visit www.newenglandclimatesolutions.org to sign the petition supporting CLF's climate vision and send your elected officials an email urging them to take action on CLF's five steps.

2. ACT NOW to reduce your family's transportation carbon footprint--pledge to avoid five car trips a week by using public transit, carpooling, walking or traveling by bicycle.

3. ACT NOW to make your house more energy efficient--buy energy efficient bulbs, unplug dormant electronics like DVD players and cell phone chargers, replace your appliances with more efficient models and sign up through your utility to do a home energy audit to identify additional savings.

4. ACT NOW to support renewable energy by signing up for green power (from wind. solar and other clean renewable energy sources) for your home and your place of work.
