Netherlands : AkzoNobel's Chelates Business Develops New Ingredient for Detergent Industry.
AkzoNobel, a global giant involved in the manufacturing of paints, coatings and specialty chemicals, has launched a new ingredient under its chelates business. The new chelating agent, Dissolvine M-40, is a readily biodegradable active ingredient (called MGDA) and it is more sustainable than alternatives used by the detergents industry.
MGDA is designed to offer excellent ecological and cleaning characteristics to the detergent industry. The new product would be a replacement for ingredients, such as, phosphates and would outperform other widely-used builders, such as citrates. Additionally, Dissolvine M-40 would enable the detergent manufacturers to meet strict environmental regulations associated with the removal of phosphate builders in the formulations. According to the company, the new product is well suited in liquid detergents.
TechSci Research depicts that the launch of a new chelating agent is expected to benefit the detergent industries across the globe by easing the regulatory pressure on them. Moreover, it represents a clear portfolio optimization and is expected to strengthen AkzoNobel's position in the chelates industry.
According to the recently published report by TechSci Research, Global Chelants Market Forecast & Opportunities, 2020, global market for chelating agents is projected to surpass USD5.4 billion through 2020. EDTA, NTA, 1,3-PDTA are the major types of chelating agents consumed in cleaning compounds, pulp & paper industry and water treatment industry. However, due to environmental & ecological effects of EDTA, NTA & other classical chelating agents, consumers are shifting their focus towards biodegradable chelating agents such as gluconic acid & glucoheptonic acids.
